SketchUp: Rearrange Your Furniture in Virtual 3D

0Comments

Instead of breaking your back rearranging your furniture, wouldn’t it be great to use technology to visualize a new layout in your home? Or maybe you’d like to see what a new sectional sofa would look like in your living room. Join us in Danbury Library’s MakerLab to learn the basics of SketchUp, a free web-based 3D mockup tool. In this 90 minute session in a small group setting, we will start on the big 4K screen by drawing a simple architect’s style floor plan of a typical living room such as yours.

Next, we will shop through SketchUp’s virtual warehouse and select sofas, arm chairs, tables, and other furnishings similar to your own, and try various layouts to see how they look. And then the real magic…. We will go 3D by adding walls with windows, artwork and photos, and finish with a virtual walk through of the different furniture placements!

Though our time is limited, you should take home enough knowledge to spend many hours modeling your own space, and over time perhaps even fine-tuning your new marketable skill! In October, part 2 of this series will explore advanced SketchUp capabilities to work on a virtual kitchen makeover, which involves more complicated objects such as upper and lower cabinets that fit together in specific dimensions between appliances!
